Kris Tapley has a pretty great article up on this year’s still wide-open Supporting Actress field over at InContention.. Seriously, it’s anyone’s game at this point. I just updated my own predictions for this category (as well as Supporting Actor), and I’ve got three veteran character actors (Miranda Richardson, Helena Bonham-Carter, and Dianne Wiest), a fresh face (Hailee Steinfeld), and a relative unknown (Jacki Weaver) as my top 5. And I’m not particularly sure about any of ’em. Still, it’s only October. In all likelihood this category will start making more sense come December.

The formerly distributor-less Nicole Kidman vehicle Rabbit Hole (an adaptation of a Tony-winning play) made a huge splash at Toronto this past week, and now finds itself with both a distributor (that’d be Lionsgate, which also picked up The Conspirator for a 2011 release) and a plans for an Oscar campaign. Though a firm release date has yet to be set, Lionsgate is planning on putting out to theaters sometime this fall.
All indications are that this is Kidman’s best performance in years, and could very well be a comeback of sorts for her. If the Best Actress race wasn’t already so crowded, I’d go so far as to say that she’s basically a lock for a nomination. So though I fully plan on having her in my Top 5 for my post-Toronto predictions update, I don’t think she necessarily has this in the bag. Dianne Wiest is another story… With the Supporting Actress category wide-open, she could easily establish herself as a frontrunner. As for Aaron Eckhart (whose performance has been slightly more divisive), I could definitely see a Golden Globe nom… Oscar less so.
