“Black Swan” Opens Venice, Wins Raves

September 1, 2010 § Leave a comment

I’ve already talked about Darren Aronofsky’s Black Swan a bit, and it’s definitely one of my most anticipated films of the fall Oscar season.  Last night it opened the Venice Film Festival and this morning the first reviews hit the web.  So far the general consensus has been overwhelmingly positive, with many reviewers calling it Aronofsky’s masterpiece and labeling Natalie Portman as a lock for Best Actress.  These should put to rest the early concern that the thriller was too “genre” for the Academy.

Awards Daily has a nice summary of the major reviews so far.

Trailer Park: “Black Swan”

Full disclosure: I’m a huge Natalie Portman fan, and I’ve been looking forward to this movie for months now so I might be a bit biased. Thankfully it seems that the rest of the blogosphere finds this trailer just as riveting as I do.  The Darren Aronofsky film, which based off of this footage has been described as both Kubrickian and Lynchian, stars Portman, Mila Kunis, Vincent Cassel, and Barbara Hershey and is a psychological thriller set in the high-stakes world of professional ballet.

As far as Oscar goes, it’s at the very least a lock for cinematography (which would be DP Matthew Libatique‘s first nomination, despite having done The Fountain and Requiem for a Dream).  It has a pretty distinct horror/thriller vibe, which Oscar only rarely goes for so Best Picture might be a stretch at this point.  That being said, Oscar went for more genre films than usual last year (Avatar, District 9, even Up) so it can’t be completely discounted.  As for Portman, I would still consider her a major contender for Best Actress even if the film dips into the horror genre.

The film hits theaters December 1 (after it shows at both Venice and Toronto)

Also, you can view the HD trailer at Apple. It’s worth it.
