Trailer Park: “Hereafter”

I would definitely not consider myself a Clint Eastwood fan. Million Dollar Baby was one of the least-deserving Best Picture winners of last decade, and the less said about Gran Torino and Flags of Our Fathers the better (although Letters From Iwo Jima was one of the best films of 2006). His newest film, which is looking to do better with the Academy than last year’s underwhelming Invictus, stars Matt Damon as a psychic who can talk to the dead. Also appearing in the film are Bryce Dallas Howard, Cecile de France, Jenifer Lewis, Richard Kind, and the 2005 tsunami.
The trailer didn’t exactly blow me away. Perhaps it was just the overwrought music, but it looks like it dips into the maudlin and melodramatic a bit too much for my liking. Damon didn’t really do much for me, though the supporting cast showed promise (I could see any one of the ladies get awards traction, especially since the supporting actress category is so weak). Not sure if the supernatural elements will work against it’s favor Oscar-wise, especially if it’s critically divisive.
